Today’s word: Conservative
So I always start with a dictionary definition to help set the tone of the blog. Here’s today’s definition:
Conservative: One who believes in a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions and preferring gradual development over abrupt change.
That’s a definition I respect greatly. I certainly prefer gradual development, which, I believe, gives us ample time to observe and assess the true value of a proposed change. I’d argue that the validity of this point of view is that, in a country as vast and variegated as ours is, time spent studying and evaluating proposed change is a necessity. An idea that may seem valid at first glance might have some hidden kinks that need to be worked out before it’s practical to put it into place. We’ll only find those kinks by taking the time to study all the probable effects of putting the idea into our governance. We certainly don’t find them by name calling and derision.
I do understand that nothing is as simple and straightforward as my blogs on ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ points of view might suggest. I only argue that spending our political capital in slamming the ‘other’ side is non-productive, at best, and destructive at worst. I believe that we all love this country and want it to thrive and prosper. We are, after all, the United States.
Until Next Time Friends!
